3D or not to 3D
So I recently saw Toy Story 3 in a 3D theater and loved the movie to death. Pixar is a studio that really plans things out before jumping into the animation stage and it shows. Moving on, because I’m not here to critique the film… just go see it, I have been reading a lot of reviews that this film doesn’t even use the 3D technology to its full advantage and that it is best to just go see the movie in regular definition and not waste your money.
This is where I would have to disagree with critics, some of which write for highly regarded newspapers still gasping for air in the technology age, as a good film done in stereoscopic 3D will not need to remind you that you are watching in 3D. I think the notion that all 3D films should jump out of the screen and try to startle the viewer is silly and the reason why 3D, up to this point, has failed horribly. Pixar does things a little differently with the technology by creating depth. You feel more like you are looking though a window than the silver screen. Because of this depth, the animators can create some stunning scenes and spectacular cinematography that would not be possible before.
As we now enter an era of video games starting to use 3D technology, I hope that developers of these games continue what Pixar has started. Things don’t need to jump out at you to make 3D exciting. We will see next year as the Nintendo 3DS is launched and see 3D start a new, hopefully exciting, chapter.
